Completely agree with this article, it’s incredibly difficult to build an environment where people are free to have thoughts and ideas without judgement. (Re: society in general doesn’t allow this today). My goal with my teams is to foster this type of conversation, because that is what it is, it’s a conversation, if you find yourself watching a lead dog on your team shutting down other team members you have to address it as quickly as possible.
The other side of this is as a manager I realize that I could be part of the problem, I would hope that my team would come to me and let me know that I am creating an environment that doesn’t support open conversations about thoughts and ideas… I’d hate it if I am the problem, but I also would understand it.
